Szczecin Film Festival on the road – Goleniów Part II

December 11th at 7:00 PM, we invite you to another film screening as part of the Szczecin Film Festival 24 at Rampa Kultura (1a Dworcowa Street) in Goleniów.
Admission is free.

We also invite you to a recorded performative reading of “Notes on Dying” by Maria Pawlikowska-Jasnorzewska, performed by Anna Januszewska.

To mark the 80th anniversary of Maria Pawlikowska-Jasnorzewska’s death in 2025, we are preparing a performative reading of her Diaries, written during World War II while in exile. These diaries reveal a lesser-known side of the prominent poet.

The reading was audiovisually recorded and became the foundation for a series of meetings with the poet’s biographer, Rafał Podraza, who will also be present in Goleniów.

Maria Pawlikowska-Jasnorzewska
A renowned poet and playwright of the interwar period, Maria Pawlikowska-Jasnorzewska was forced to leave Poland with the outbreak of World War II. She and her husband traveled through France to England, where, longing for her homeland and family, she began writing her diary. With raw, vivid, and often stark language, she chronicled her emigration ordeal and her losing battle with cancer, day by day.

Over a decade ago, Rafał Podraza, a researcher of the Kossak family’s history (Pawlikowska-Jasnorzewska was the daughter of painter Wojciech Kossak and sister of writer Magdalena Samozwaniec), collected her unpublished diaries and published them as “War Spawned by Satan: Notes 1939–1945.”

Years later, Podraza returned to this unique testament of one of the most important Polish poets of the 20th century. In collaboration with Radio Szczecin, he reworked the diaries, focusing on themes of illness, suffering, and Pawlikowska-Jasnorzewska’s extraordinary strength. The collection was titled “Notes on Dying.”

This poignant story is read by Anna Januszewska, one of Szczecin’s most celebrated actresses. With her sensitivity and exceptional talent, Januszewska brings a new dimension to “Notes on Dying.” She performed the reading accompanied by live music by Krzysztof Baranowski.
