“Niedobre oblicza” (Unkind Faces)

“The premiere of the play took place on September 3, 2004. It was a production inspired by the works of Witold Gombrowicz. ‘Niedobre oblicza’ was a play that arose from the rebellious youthful energy of the actors. Through Gombrowicz’s words, parodic family scenes, grotesque exaggeration of characters, and—most importantly for Brama—a deeply moving use of song, they told a story about themselves: about their time, their struggles, and their relationships with the reality surrounding them. In a satirical, ambiguous, and painful way, they came to terms with their parents, school, and the system that they found difficult to navigate but felt they were constantly being forced into. In doing so, they also confronted themselves. (…) It was through this work with the cast that Daniel began to understand that if he wanted to create theater capable of conveying something truthful, he needed to draw primarily from people: to give them the space to express themselves and to tell their stories, allowing the stage to become a place of self-discovery on many levels. (…) ‘Niedobre oblicza’ was a play about young people, for young people, and created by young people. This was evident in both the actors’ expressiveness and the themes tackled in the play. It was a humorous and dynamic narrative about growing up and individuality, aligning with the tradition of socially and politically engaged art.”

VI BRAMAT Festival

In 2004, the sixth BRAMAT theater festival was organized by Teatr Brama. Over the years, everything had changed—from the creative awareness of Daniel and his actors to the nature of their activities and the involvement and identification of Goleniów’s residents with Brama. The BRAMAT festival featured a total of 27 cultural events. Alongside eight competition plays, a large group of “Friends of BRAMAT” also participated, including festival guests such as Teatr Vorpommern from Greifswald, Atsushi Takenouchi and Hiroko Komiya from Japan, as well as music groups. Multiday Polish-German-Lithuanian workshops, led by Arti Grabowski and culminating in an outdoor performance, were part of the program. Outside of the competition, Unia Teatr Niemożliwy presented Opcje życia (Options of Life), previously awarded at Szczecin’s Kontrapunkt festival. Screenings of films from Andrzej Wajda’s Master School of Film Directing also took place. This edition of BRAMAT established the festival as a significant artistic event, extending far beyond the scope of Goleniów.
